Five rig teams and 17 individuals were awarded with FIRST Excellence Awards for their performances in 2010. The awards are given each year to Transocean’s elite performers who go above and beyond in representing Transocean’s FIRST Core Values. To be named a FIRST Excellence Award recipient, one must first make it through an extensive nomination and review process.
The 17 individuals and representatives from five rigs were flown to Houston with their families for a dinner ceremony and other activities. Since several of the recipients had never been to Houston, they took advantage of their free time by making day trips to NASA or to Galveston Beach.
At the ceremony, President and CEO Steven Newman showed much appreciation to the recipients. He explained that Transocean’s successes and accomplishments are directly confirmed by the performances of leading employees. “Having such dedicated and committed employees allows Transocean to be the number one leading company in our industry,” he said.
Several of the recipients thanked their managers and training resources for giving them the opportunities to excel in their positions. “Transocean will always put you in a position to succeed. The company prepares you to meet future challenges,” many recipients said.
When asked what’s best about working at Transocean, it was unanimous—“The people and global support.” Having such a diverse and supportive group of employees is what really sets Transocean apart from others, they said. At the ceremony, it was clear that diversity is one of the company’s greatest strengths.
Award recipients ranged from Rig Welders to Vice President, Operations, and everything in between. They came from all over the world, starting at Greenway Plaza in Houston, all the way to Africa, Turkmenistan, Singapore, and every other corner of the world. Some have been with the company for as little as three years, while others have spent nearly 40 years with Transocean.
Although these recipients are the company’s finest assets, they were all extremely humble. Most of them seemed shocked and were not expecting to receive the award. They explained that they were just doing their jobs as they were taught, by following the FIRST core values: Financial Discipline, Integrity, Respect, Safety, and Technical Leadership. To these employees, the FIRST core values are a fundamental guide to everyday decision making as they work to achieve our vision of an incident-free workplace, all the time, everywhere.
