Brazil. The Sky's the Limit (page 7)

In order to help
meet the technological challenges of our customers in Brazil – or anywhere – Transocean rigs need to be in top shape to perform. Many Transocean rigs in the Brazil region have or will undergo shipyard work to breathe some new life into our vessels operating there.

The Sedco 706, now working offshore Brazil, underwent such an extensive overhaul that it was listed among the company’s newbuild projects. After more than a year at KeppelFELS shipyard in Singapore, which included a DP conversion and upgrade to work in water depths up to 6,500 feet (1,981 meters), the rig is on contract with customer Chevron after working out the issues associated with a major start-up.

Other rigs in Brazil are getting a facelift as well. The semisubmersible Transocean Driller is currently in the shipyard, and poised to come back to work for Petrobras performing even better than before.

“Looking at all the performance and safety, the Driller was probably up there in the top two or three rigs working for Petrobras,” said Ricardo Solis, the Driller’s brand-new Rig Manager, Performance. “I think we’ve done a great job, and I think we can do even better going forward.”

In 2010, the drillship Deepwater Navigator will have an upgrade (an overhaul of its thrusters, drilling equipment and accommodations) and the drillship Deepwater Discovery will undergo a 5-year survey. The semisubmersible Cajun Express will spend some time in the shipyard before it begins work for Petrobras next spring.

Even offshore, a heightened focus on maintenance and upkeep keeps our rigs in Brazil in good shape.

And in a land of sun, sand and supermodels “good shape,” is certainly saying something.

“Transocean is different than other companies,” said Alberto. “For instance, when we say that you are in power to shut down an operation, we really mean that. It’s the walk the talk concept, and we see a lot of people who leave the company who end up coming right back because of it.”
