Higher and Higher: Focusing on People Development

Ask anyone in Brazil about people development – onshore or off – and guaranteed they can rattle off a dozen names of people they know who have been given the opportunity to grow and achieve their career goals at Transocean.
Bruno Manfredini, Eduarda Pina, Marco Tulio, Adriana Souza, Marcio Martins, Ricardo Marinho, Wellington Junior, Alberto Garcia: These are just a few of the names that were continuously cited as career success stories in Brazil … and the list only continues to grow. It’s proof that development, especially of local Brazilians, has snowballed in Brazil – and the ball is kept rolling because of the people who have positive experiences.
“I’m just doing the same thing that was done for me,” said Marcio Martins, Division QHSE Manager, who began his career as an English teacher aboard the Transocean Driller in 1999.
“I was one of the models for a lot of the other guys that come after me,” said Alberto Garcia, Operations Manager, Asset, who started as a Trainee aboard the Sedco 710 in 1995. “Because if I was able to succeed, why can’t anyone else?”
Today, says Division Managing Director Guilherme Coelho, the region also has a particularly storied success with the REP program, which boasts many successful participants including Marilia Maia.
Marilia, who started as an REP with Transocean in 2006, spent three years learning the ins and outs of rig operations – drilling and maintenance – as soon as she graduated from university. Now, as an engineer in the Rio de Janeiro office, Marilia is assisting in the planning for a 2010 special survey of the Deepwater Discovery.
“Working at Transocean, you can do things that you never thought you could do before,” she said. “You’re not just designing equipment, you’re putting it in place and seeing how it works in the field. It’s not just about academics and technical skills.”
What does she see herself doing for Transocean from here? “Everything!” she smiles.
